Does your device support eSIM? Check in one minute before you buy

A check on your own device takes under a minute — and it is more reliable than the model name.

① The definitive check: dial ‎*#06#‎

Open your phone dialler and dial ‎*#06#‎ to show your device details. If you see an EID line (a long 32-digit number), your device really does support eSIM. If only an IMEI appears with no EID, it does not.

This beats going by model name: the same model differs by country of purchase — Apple states features are not available on all models or in all countries, and Google notes that some Pixel devices bought in Japan differ.

② Even with eSIM support: carrier lock

A carrier-locked device may refuse another provider's eSIM even though it supports eSIM technically. If you bought your device on instalments or bundled with a line, ask that carrier whether it is unlocked for other providers — both Apple and Google defer this question to the carrier.

③ Confirm in Settings (approximate path)

The path is usually roughly: Settings → Network or Connections or Cellular → Add eSIM or Add plan. The name and location differ by device, manufacturer and system version, so if it is not there, search your settings for the word eSIM.

Installing an eSIM needs an internet connection (Wi‑Fi is enough) — stated in Apple's own guide.

When should you install your eSIM?
The plan validity (1 day) starts the moment you install the eSIM, not at first use - and the clock runs even if you never connect to a network. So if the plan comfortably outlasts your trip, installing it now makes little difference; if it is close to your trip length, install it when you arrive.

Install it now, keep your home line as the data line, then turn on automatic data switching so your phone moves to the new eSIM when you arrive: on iPhone the option is called Allow Cellular Data Switching in your cellular data settings, and on Android it is Automatic data switching in the second SIM settings (mobile data must be on for both SIMs). Names and paths are approximate and may differ on your device and its system. Worth knowing: this keeps your home line, but it does not pause the plan validity - the clock starts at installation either way.
